How I got into Katekyo Hitman Reborn! or I thought those numbers were word counts.





So. Reborn.

Or I should say- Katekyo Hitman REBORN!

(I can't believe I like a fandom with an exclamation mark in the title. Excuse me while I hide my head in shame.)


The first time I ran into Reborn was when I noticed that a few authors I like had written stories for it.

I was not pleased.

Why were these amazing authors writing in a fandom I wasn't in? Why couldn't they write more stuff that I actually read, huh? Huh huh huh?!

(I am a spoiled rotten fan. In my defense, however, this bratty phase never lasts very long. *coughSmallvillecoughHikagocoughSGAcoughEverythingcough*)

So, eventually I was bored enough one day to give Reborn a try. A very grudging, resentful try. And I didn't start from the source material, oh no, I jumped right in to the fic. Canon, scoffed to myself. Who needs canon to understand a manga/anime with an exclamation mark in the title? Psssh.

I'm pretty sure one of the first fics I read was Interrogation by kerbox. I figured, okay, there's at least one major pairing here (eta: One. Ha!), where the one guy's prickly while the other is laid back, there are crazy siblings involved and poisoning people seems to be an accepted part of life. Alright. Maybe I'll give it a try. A little try. I'll just do some lite research on this pairing, I thought. 

So I looked around LJ and I came to the point in life where every KHR fan says to herself ...

...WTF IS UP WITH ALL OF THESE NUMBERS?!?! Really. Really.

I thought those were word counts.

One of my first fandoms, back in the dark age that was my stint at the Pit, was Gundam Wing. I get the crazy-numbers-as-pairing-labels thing, it was one of the first fannish skills I mastered (try to put that on a resume). But.

8057? 2780? 6996? 692718?

8923047203752397402?!

(For those curious, only the last number is not a valid pairing name. I know. I know.)

I was ever so slightly appalled. I recall thinking something along the lines of, 'Oh, HELL NO, I am not going to retake algebra just to get into a fandom! I won't! I refuse!'

Except, you know, I was still confused and I don't like being confused, so I researched some more and then I looked at more fic and then Wikipedia got involved and by that time I was lost. Lost, wandering as a babe in the woods and oh, hello, there new fandom!

And that's how I got into KHR.


Next up: what I think about the manga and also, my opinions on Gokudera (and by 'opinions' I mean psychological profiling because lord knows the boy probably needs it. I love Gokudera).
