xxxHolic and Tsubasa update! Fiiiiiiiinaly.
But Holic has another break, no more til Feb. *cries*
My theory- both stories will end by April 1st. I mean, wouldn't that just fit perfectly?
So, Watanuki doesn't know what he likes.
*gasp*
*shock*
Yeah. No kidding Watanuki doesn't know what he wants. The important thing here, though, is that now he actually admits it. He's facing it and realizing that, you know, maybe his biggest problem wasn't the seeing ghosts thing. That was probably the most immediate problem, but not necessarily the underlying one.
I'm reminded of the chapter with the refrigerators and the little lightening guy. Watanuki said he would always pick the 'dud,' the one appliance that was doomed to fail from the start. Then Yuuko's like, look closer you silly boy, and Watanuki looks and sees the bad vibes coming off of the fridge he would have chosen. It's the first time he really saw that he picks up things that are bad for him.
Speaking of things that are bad for him. Himawari. The one person who, while a very nice girl at heart, could make Watanuki's life even worse than it already is and he gets a massive crush on her.
What I like best about this manga, though, is that even after he knows that she's bad for him, he still wants her in his life because he does actually like her. And I think that this is something he had to grow into, that his first attraction to Himawari was part of his 'drawn to bad things' and 'I don't even know what I really like' problems.
We can see it very early on when Yuuko asks Watanuki just what, exactly, it is that he likes about Himawari. He couldn't answer and blithely brushed the question off. Now, though, I think he could give a good answer. She's his friend.
Watanuki's problem isn't just that he's a magnet for ghosts. He's a magnet for bad things in general. Though that may be too vague of a statement. He makes choices that attract things that are bad for him.
And the flip side of that problem is that he pushes away things that are good for him, like certain monotone classmates who save his life on a regular basis. That's another question Yuuko asked that Watanuki couldn't answer- why does he hate Doumeki so much? What made him so angry that he couldn't stand the other boy and let loose with a 'flying kick' the first time he saw him? It's the Himawari Problem in reverse.
But now Watanuki's realizing the situation that he's in. I think he's really started to get it and it's such a joy to see. It's just. *flail* He's come so far!
And he didn't even have to stab anyone with a sword to do it!
