xxxHolic and Tsubasa update! Fiiiiiiiinaly.

But Holic has another break, no more til Feb. *cries*

My theory- both stories will end by April 1st. I mean, wouldn't that just fit perfectly?

So, Watanuki doesn't know what he likes.

*gasp*

*shock*

Yeah. No kidding Watanuki doesn't know what he wants. The important thing here, though, is that now he actually admits it. He's facing it and realizing that, you know, maybe his biggest problem wasn't the seeing ghosts thing. That was probably the most immediate problem, but not necessarily the underlying one.

I'm reminded of the chapter with the refrigerators and the little lightening guy. Watanuki said he would always pick the 'dud,' the one appliance that was doomed to fail from the start. Then Yuuko's like, look closer you silly boy, and Watanuki looks and sees the bad vibes coming off of the fridge he would have chosen. It's the first time  he really saw that he picks up things that are bad for him.

Speaking of things that are bad for him. Himawari. The one person who, while a very nice girl at heart, could make Watanuki's life even worse than it already is and he gets a massive crush on her.

What I like best about this manga, though, is that even after he knows that she's bad for him, he still wants her in his life because he does actually like her. And I think that this is something he had to grow into, that his first attraction to Himawari was part of his 'drawn to bad things' and 'I don't even know what I really like' problems.

We can see it very early on when Yuuko asks Watanuki just what, exactly, it is that he likes about Himawari. He couldn't answer and blithely brushed the question off. Now, though, I think he could give a good answer. She's his friend.

Watanuki's problem isn't just that he's a magnet for ghosts. He's a magnet for bad things in general. Though that may be too vague of a statement. He makes choices that attract things that are bad for him.

And the flip side of that problem is that he pushes away things that are good for him, like certain monotone classmates who save his life on a regular basis. That's another question Yuuko asked that Watanuki couldn't answer- why does he hate Doumeki so much? What made him so angry that he couldn't stand the other boy and let loose with a 'flying kick' the first time he saw him? It's the Himawari Problem in reverse.

But now Watanuki's realizing the situation that he's in. I think he's really started to get it and it's such a joy to see. It's just. *flail* He's come so far!

And he didn't even have to stab anyone with a sword to do it!

Hi there I totally randomly found you blog through googling and just wanted to say that this is a really fantastic analysis of Watanuki's character and his interactions with Doumeki and Himawari. Now if he'd only just stop pushing Doumeki away. Sigh.
I think that you got it spot on and it was a joy to read.

That is all!

Oh gosh, I so sorry it took this long to respond! Things have been pretty hectic on this side of the internet for a while and I haven't been able to play catch up with LJ as much as i wanted to.

But this made me smile! :D Thank you for commenting! It makes me feel better to know that I'm not talking out into empty air. ^_^

Though I have to ask, what search brought this up as a result?? I've had other people stumble on this journal through a google search, but I keep forgetting to ask what search words they used. ^_^;; I don't mind, the more the merrier! I'm just curious about how people are finding this journal. XD

(btw, love your icon!)

Oh don't worry about it. I undesrtand how easy it is to get backed up with internet related things. Haha.

I read some of your other posts too actually, would you mind if I added you as a friend? I love reading introspective/analytical stuff about series I like ^^

I think I googled something like "Watanuki Doumeki pairing popularity" or something. I was looking for polls or some such thing about which pairing was more popular, HimawarixWatanuki or DoumekixWatanuki. But yeah, just regular old google :D

(Thanks I love Gokudera :D)

New Friends are awesome! Friend away. :D

Yeah, I uh. Kinda over analyze things. A lot. But, hey, it keeps me happy. I usually try to stay within the base logic of whatever universe I'm reading in, but sometimes things can get cracky. ^_^

(ps- Gokudera is awesome in a really bipolar way. XD)

Hooray! (adds you as a friend)

Me too, I pretty much live off the tvtropes wiki and I over analyze everything I watch/read haha. I look forward to reading more stuff from you ^^

(Yeah Gokudera's super tsundere, that's why I love him so much. I love seeing him maturing and grow up)

Oh man me too. I'll open it to reference like one character/plot trope and six hours later I'm still there! It's happened so many times haha.

I love it though, so deliciously addictive ^^
