1) I have been spending my days playing a lot of Rock Band and reading some ST:Reboot fic.
I was playing yesterday when Conventional Lover by Speck came on. It's important to note that I read the band name as 'Spock' at the time.
So I'm playing the song and it's gets about a third of the way through before I really start listening to the lyrics. I started laughing and laughing and messing up my score beyond belief because that is one tricky chorus, but I did not care because I was laughing too much.
A little taste.
"I wanna be your captain, my Pon Farr is a-risin'
So step on over here girl, my love is enterprisin'."
And since I had read the band name as Spock at first, I spent the entire song imagining it was Spock singing it instead of a Trekkie fanboy. I think my interpretation is better. XD
2) On the subject of Star Trek, there's something I feel the need to make very clear.
I am not a Trekkie.
I come from a solidly Star Wars based household. My early scifi experiences were all built around good, Force-based values, none of this wamsy-pamsy Prime Directive mumbo jumbo. It has always been an established fact in my understanding of the extended universe that Kirk was a tool and Solo was made of awesome. That was just the way things were.
The movie...may have changed things. I think I'm having an existential crises. People, I have been to Memory Alpha. *holds head in hands*
I am not a Trekkie, I am not a Trekkie, iamnotatrekkie.
3) The new Holic chapter is out! Am still waiting for translations since written Japanese and I do not go well together. Then again, spoken Japanese and I don't get along all that well either, but at least we're on speaking terms with each other. (haha, see what I did there, i am so lame. /o\)

Date: 2009-07-04 01:29 pm (UTC)Gee. might have to watch it, now. Problem is, all I've ever watched of "Star Trek" is "first contact", and that's only because my sister got it for free... with no subtitles, so I watched it a few times in my teenager years as listening comprehension practice (and there are still parts of it that I don't quite get). I can safely say I'm not a trekkie, because i haven't watched enough of it to be one. XD
But I know myself, and how obsessive I can be when it comes to watching everything there is to be watched of a particular story, and that would mean starting from the very first series, and slowly working my way to the present... and that's a lot.
...but if the movie is that good, I just may do it.
Darn it. :P
(and I want that new chapter of xxxholic, too!! It's been more than a month already!! >_<)
Oh, and just to send you to new levels of disbelief... can you believe that my dad has never watched even one of the Star Wars movies? not even the old ones? (though he watched "Planet of the Apes" several times as a kid... does that count for anything? :P)

Date: 2009-07-04 05:59 pm (UTC)I haven't watched any of the Original Series in Star Trek, and I've only seen a couple of episodes from the other series while passing through channels. I always thought the original series was campy and I don't like campy.
(I realize now that mostly the OS was very sixties, but whatever, same thing in my mind. :X)
Dude, there's something like 500 novels written about Star Trek. Plus the movies. Plus five different TV series. It's...a ridiculous amount. And the sites Memory Alpha and Memory Beta are wikis that include details from all of it.
Ha, I've met people who've never seen any of the Star Wars, Star Trek or Matrix movies. Not even Lord of the Rings! I'm afraid the look I gave them was very much along the lines of, 'what planet are you from?'
Holic- and it'll probably be at least another month until the next chapter, too. It's almost over, why do they have to drag it out for so loooooooooooooong? *sulks*

Date: 2009-07-04 09:44 pm (UTC)My point exactly. The sheer amount of things available scares me, and I don't want to get into it in case I really do feel like hunting for all of them (that, and the trekkies kind of scare me).
I think they're dragging xxxholict out because it's very important that the timing is right between the events in xxxholic and the ones in TRC; since xxxholic is shorter, they can't have it ending before the other one.
Plus remember they are involved in several projects... they have to dedicate some time to Kobato and to the script of whatever series they are going to start after both of these end (they always have the script ready before starting to draw it, which is why all their stories have such good plots).
This doesn't make the wait any less frustrating, though. :P

Date: 2009-07-13 01:38 am (UTC)Also, they were in France this last month, probably didn't have much time to work on anything at all. And whatever the ending for one is gonna be, it's almost certain that it'll spoil at least a bit of the other one.

Date: 2009-07-13 02:52 am (UTC)Like, if you didn't know what was going on in Tsubasa? You would be so confused as to why Yuuko is currently being eaten up by black goo. Not that, you know, I'm entirely sure why she's being eaten by the Blob in any case, but not paying attention to Tsubasa would bring the level of WTF up above the stratosphere.

Date: 2009-07-13 03:10 am (UTC)It's funny, because it's this close to the end and I haven't got the foggiest where the serie are going. I can speculate to my heart's content, and I will probably not get even close to what is about to happen... Darn CLAMP and their devilish story-telling skills. >_<
Yeah... seriously, what is with the black goo? and while we're at it... what is with the freaking egg?! I haven't been this frustrated since Wish and the "that human is..." thing, and that was considerably shorter and was already finished by the time I started reading, so the suffering didn't last this long! >_<
...darn clamp. Why must they torture us so...?

Date: 2009-07-04 04:04 pm (UTC)I don't know a single thing about Star Trek. I think it says a lot about where I come from, pffft.

Date: 2009-07-04 05:41 pm (UTC)And Doumeki! See, at first I'd think that Doumeki wouldn't ever be hasty about anything, but then I realize that that just means he'll think long and hard about it with diligent patience and then do the stupid risky thing anyway. It actually makes him the scariest person in xxxHolic because you know that what ever it is he ends up doing, he's doing it because he thought long and hard about it and decided it had to be done. Even if it's something like killing the woman in the park.
Gah, I forgot about that earring, too. It was on my list of things that need to be cleared up before the end, though now I guess I can cross the appearance of Maru and Moro. Still want to know what happened to Mugetsu, though.
I wonder if Watanuki would ever be able to get his memories back. I wonder what he remembers in the first place.
